Billy Joel Build

Billy Joel Build - 04/27/18 06:14 PM

No: It's not going to be a Model #18 with enough room in the handle for cocaine. It is going to be a Randall knife but in compliance with "all" portions of New York state! That means: No top edge sharpened.
For the sake of clarity, we can build anything you, my "Crew", votes on but it cannot be a Randall model that comes sharp on both edges. That means not even a #1 (or #19) that can be ordered with the top bevel not sharpened. That's my only "rule" for this build.
OK all of you new members, this is your chance to join the build. Let's shoot for 25 forum members who, not only partake in the construction, but actually "want" it when completed!
That's it..."GO"!!!
Stay sharp (but only on 1 edge),
Capt. Chris

"They say that these are not the best of times, but their the only times I've ever known...."

I recommend the #4 small skinner for this build! It's a great blade shape and we never really consider or talk much about the #4.

Would be nice to stipulate NOT building something that we have built in the past 2 or so years as well. Get a different model into the spot light.

Joe don't disagree with you on the politicians; sometimes we feel like we are in a socialist state! But New York for me is one of the best places on earth to do woodwork. Many other thing as well, as long as you shut off the news.

Tough carry laws in NYC, my EDC is a Triathlete with black palm scales.

Re: Billy Joel Build - 04/28/18 10:22 AM

If the knife is to be 'legal' to be carried in all parts of New York State, including New York City, then the blade must be less than 4" in length. While NYS law does not impose blade length restrictions on knives, the New York City Administrative Code does. NYCAC 10-133 ("Possession of knives or instruments") states:

"b. It shall be unlawful for any person to carry on his or her person or have in such person’s possession, in any public place, street, or park any knife which has a blade length of four inches or more."

There are exceptions to this provision (in subsection "d."), but none of them apply to this build.

* GTR received "0" negatives
* #26 & Denmark received only 1 vote in opposition each
* #20 received 2 negatives
* #4-4 1/2" & #11 each received "3" ouster favors.
So, Crew: Where do we go from here? Let's see what you think. Shall we continue our process of elimination? Shall we discuss and defend our favorite choice from the models still left standing? (Which: BTW, mine is still standing). Let's here from you. Not a roll call vote but a poll...should we:
* Discuss our reasons for our favorites
* Ax a couple more
* Other

Well if a smaller knife is the preferred consideration, I'm now open to the 26 or GTR.
Posted by: nate-dogg

Re: Billy Joel Build - 05/04/18 04:22 PM

I personally only like the model 11 with the 5 inch blade, so if we are wanting to go with a shorter blade length, I'd say eliminate the model 11. Of the remaining knives, i like the idea of a gtr or 26. And unless we are building a knife that will primarily used for skinning, I'd say eliminate the model 4 also.
Posted by: Brent

Re: Billy Joel Build - 05/04/18 04:39 PM

I know that I voted for the GTR for the build,but after studying the catalog for awhile, I feel the model 26 is a better choice. I always like a "pointy" tip on my outdoor knives. I feel that it would be a better all around user, than the GTR . However, owning neither knife, I would happily defer to people who own and use them both.

Re: Billy Joel Build - 05/05/18 01:01 PM

I think under 5 inches for this build is where we are headed... possibly under 4 as well.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Billy Joel Build - 05/05/18 01:47 PM

Some want under and some want a 5 inch blade. We can't do both but neither one is out of the loop just yet. NYC laws and NY "State Laws" outstanding I think we should build what we decide on by majority voting. I don't live there, don't want to, but a lot to consider when finalizing our choice.
Having used "everything" that's still on the table, I can tell you of advantages for each and every one. Personally: A 5 inch Model #11 is my least favorite of an Alaskan's blade length choices. If I were out with The James' Gang all the time and skinning elk & bear I might change my mind. For me, a 4" or 4 1/2" are a better "all-around" choice. A 3 1/4" as better choice for whitetails and smaller game.
....and...this is just to open discussion on Alaskan skinners. We have not ruled out many others and I don't know if this is even going to be a "Hunter's Knife"??
Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Billy Joel Build - 05/05/18 08:01 PM

Well Cap, being in Central Idaho, we have elk, whitetail, mulies, and a good share of black bear and Couger. For me, these builds are more for something different and unique for my collection, as I have plenty of carry knives for field use.
I suppose any knife as a result of this build opportunity might fit my bill.
I'm enjoying the chance to participate.

Re: Billy Joel Build - 05/05/18 09:04 PM

Personally, as a user, I am not a fan of an upsweep blade. For skinning they are great until they get dull, then very hard to sharpen. Then there's the problem using an upsweep blade For gutting and punctured guts. For me, I prefer a clip blade or a drop point as a user, but that's just me. I do have and have used both a Model 3 and Model 7, that do have a slight upsweep, but my still go-to is a Model 5. That being said the Denmark looks pretty good, although I have not owned one. If I lived in Alaska, the Model 19-5 would be my first choice. Sorry for the rant.

Actually, my favorite hunting style blade is the semi-skinner. The best of all worlds, slightly upsweep, but drop point at the end. This is a 50 year old Case with a beech slab handle that i got in college and used in our meats lab. We butchered every farm animal and we were graded on our quality of knife work. Most of my classmates bought the semi-skinner. Wish there was a Randall version. Bob Loveless had this design, but added a single hilt, which I like.

Mike that is very close to the Green River skinner which is a favorite of mine. Not for gutting though.

Re: Billy Joel Build - 05/06/18 03:21 PM

I've used larger knives for the initial tummy cut, but mostly use a sharp pocket knife with my trigger finger on the point, then go from the sternum to the crotch.

Yes, Green River no doubt made this design first, but I know this one was a Case, because about 10 of us bought from the same hardware store.

Ideally, I use "2" RMKs for most skinning and gutting jobs. I have skinned and gutted a boatload, folks...and that ain't no hay! There are many evenings when it seems as though every member of my hunting camp hauls a whitetail or hog in. That leads to a lot of skinning.
I have no idea which way this build will go but I enjoy the fact that it is getting so much "air play"! Guess we're all just missin' the woods! Keep it going and let's hear from the "civilians" in all of this...the people who don't hunt and want this knife for a totally different purpose.
What say you?

Picking the "color" of the stag is only going to happen if we supply a piece as CW. Otherwise it's going to be shop supplied and luck of the draw.

Good talking to you tonight Tony.,,,

A lot of talk on the 4 inch Alaskan. Let's assume it's on "The Short List". Let's have 2 other choices to vote on for our final choice..."&"..."Other" #11's still count.
Let's here from you! ROLL COUNT VOTE!! Counting the #11'4 inch as already in the final "3"...what other "2"?

Re: Billy Joel Build - 06/17/18 10:13 AM

Ok Crew:
We're building a Randall Model #11, Alaskan Skinner! Great choice, to be sure. There are "4" different versions (blade length) of Alaskans. All but the 3 1/4" have the instantly recognizable thumb notch cutout, atop the blade, just in front of the single hilt. To note:
* 3 1/4" & 4" are forged from 3/16" bar stock
* 4 1/2" & 5" are 1/4" stock
* Carbon steel (O1 tool steel) is standard
* 3 1/4" knife comes standard with a stag handle
* All others come in leather as standard
It's entirely up you you crew members, as to "which" we shall make! Let's here from you...(& Happy Fathers Day)!
Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Billy Joel Build - 06/22/18 05:09 PM

OK Crew,
We are building a N.Y. applicable build, as far as a single sharpened edge is concerned. The Alaskan Skinner, in a 4 inch blade length rocks...and thumb notches are standard, saving us one of those 5 precious options! A lot to still discuss before this #11 goes to forge. Try to always keep in mind that there are always new members who:
* May not know how the build progresses
* May not have vast knowledge as to the functionability of a #11. Let's help them, along the way, to the completion of this fine build!
We could start by our impression of what would make the ideal blade steel...and "why". 2 are available. The Alaskan is hand forged from:
* Either O1 tool steel (a carbon steel)
............OR..........
* 440B (a stainless steel)
From a personal view, I have used both with equally fantastic cutting results...if not the exact "other" results. "That's" where we should start our discussion, if you're so inclined. We would all love to hear your actual "experience" with these 2 steels...not necessarily what you've "heard".
Let's get it going, whatcha' say?
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Re: Billy Joel Build - 06/22/18 05:36 PM

We have:
* Model #11-4"
* Carbon steel
* Thumb notches
* Nickel silver single hilt
* Squared top
* Aluminum & red spacers
* RBM handle material
* SFG handle shaping
....That's "4" options. We have room for "1" more....or not. Let's hear from you on your thoughts about a wrist thong, compass, etc... "&" also: Sheath choice!

Posted by: pappy19

Re: Billy Joel Build - 07/20/18 07:24 PM

When you are up to your elbows in blood and guts, and your knife slips out of your hand, if you are using a wrist thong, you can easily recover and resume business. It may not be a big issue with whitetail, but elk, caribou and moose are a different story. Trying to find a blood encased knife in a large cavity, could be troublesome, and you could get cut trying to find it. Been there done that. If this is to be a safe queen, then no matter, but I look at hunting knives all as being potential users.

Re: Billy Joel Build - 07/23/18 07:07 PM

OK Crew:
We are finished, topped off and good-to-go! Thanks for all your help. We lost steam a time or two but not crew members. That's good to see!
I have counted the crew members, starting from day #1 until completion. 34 names. I will post "50" numbers for your consideration. Please select your favorite "3" choices, in order of preference. Numbers will be issued on a 1st come-1st served basis.
Although we had 34 crew members post a response I would not categorize all of those posts as true "participation". Don't get me wrong: All are eligible. I would ask that, staring with our next build, for all who would like consideration and a number to please participate...not simply vote! A true exchange of ideas and input is beneficial to all who get it.
Now: Numbers are coming for the following:
* Randall Model #11-4 inch
* Hand forged carbon steel blade
* O1 tool steel used
* 4 inch blade length
* 3/16 inch blade stock
* A true drop point blade design
* Thumb notches (Old-style/cutout)
* Nickel silver single hilt
* Squared top hilt
* Aluminum & red spacers
* Red & blue micarta handle
* Single finger grip handle shape
* Wrist thong
* Model B sheath, in black leather
** Footnote: I will give the lucky number winner their choice of the following:
* Sheath: Right or Left handed
* Sheath: With or without pocket hone
Again: Thanks for a great build.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: Billy Joel Build - 07/26/18 02:52 PM

Wanted to add the captain has a very fair point about “participation” versus simple voting

I’ll be the first to admit I’m guilty of the latter - somewhat out of a deference to the vast amount of knowledge to senior crew members here - that said, no reason to not give an opinion - no matter how much others might disagree.

In several years using the internet- I cannot recall anyone showing up at my doorstep to complain about my opinions....posting back to me,sure...but if your going to be so easily offended your probably in the wrong place to start with and it’s clear there’s no tolerance for “personal” level attacks around here. There’s a wealth of knowledge here and one of the best ways to learn is participation
