Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/20/17 09:53 AM

My grandfather gave me my first Randall which means the world to me. I'm looking for a 4 inch stainless Randall fixed blade that I could city carry without the public dialing 911.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum sir!

While not a 4 inch it appears Captain Chris has a nice red #10-3" available. The #10-3" makes a great edc, they are very stout and very practical!

Welcome,

There are a lot of options in the 4" range. Are you looking for a small field knife?

No offense to any other sellers but I think all you need to do is go to Tunefink's web site under newer knives and there are plenty of options. I especially like the model 26 with stag he has up for sale. Also a nice model 8 at a good price.

PS -- Welcome!

Be aware that local knife laws vary greatly from state to state and from city to city. Some localities prohibit double edged blades, some prohibit knives with blade lengths longer than specified. Find a reputable source (not necessarily the local police!) and be sure.

Welcome to the forum.
I do the 10-3 and Tri Athelete.
You would like both.

Welcome to the forum.
The 10/3 is the knife I carry the most and is a great choice.
When I want to show of a bit the #27 copper mini is a great knife with a 3 1/2" blade and a fancy handle long enough to fit my hand.
What model did your grandfather give you?

Mr. Poyner is right. And if those two aren't enough, then here they are, plus two more small, easy-carry knives (plus a 4-inch Pathfinder).

PLEASE don't call Billy Mr., his head will swell. Sorry Brother.

To Thomas, the OP, welcome. There is nothing wrong with 10-3 and Triathletes.

I prefer a 5-4. If you can handle any of the suggested knives, you will find something that feels right for you.

Re: Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/20/17 06:52 PM

A nice 5- 4 would be my first choice followed by a Mod. 26. They both have good options that would please you. You might want to think about a high ride sheath. If you want something a little larger I would go with a Mod. 25.that is just that is one of my favorites.

Re: Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/20/17 10:12 PM

A full size handle sticking out of a sheath will almost always get attention.
A pouch sheath usually gets less notice.
I have a 19 that gets much less notice in my pouch sheath than it does in the regular sheath, same knife just that it's mostly in leather.
Not saying carry a 19 but a 4 inch blade has a bigger outline of the blade in regular sheath than a pouch does, JMO.

Double edged knives (daggers) are most generally unacceptable.

Maybe this link will help you (and others) to avoid problems in some states.

Personally, with this size, a knife I also like for EDC is the 21.

Massachusetts...for one...

Limits on Carry. It is illegal to carry, open or concealed, switchblades, dirks, daggers, stilettos, ballistic knife, double edge knives, and knuckle knives. ... Folding knives, Swiss army knives, and kitchen knives are legal to carry as long as you do not behave in a way that makes them dangerous.

Mass is right... also the majority of the Communist Republic of New York and New Jersey is against double edge blades.

Pert-near everywhere I know of -unless you have a permit for “concealed weapons”, most places frown heavily on “dirks & daggers”. Here in NC we have a “pistol permit”, knives are “not” included. Best not be caught around these parts with a fish-tail twenty-four in a groovy, leather frogged neck sheath.

Texas until recently, for one.

Michigan, New Mexico, and Colorado still won't let you carry double-edged "concealed". Felony crime in Michigan, if the charge sticks.

Denver has some goofy measuring standard for double-edged knives, making them effectively illegal. Colorado passed some recent laws, unsure if they included a preemption clause to shut down silly city laws.

Re: Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/21/17 06:34 PM

Effective Aug. 09, 2017, Colorado repealed the ban on switchblade and gravity knives, but...(there is always a "but")
Kniferights.org added the following:

WARNING: Automatic (switchblade) and gravity knives are still subject to Colorado’s concealed carry blade length limitation of 3.5 inches or less.

WARNING: Unfortunately, while the state law has changed in Colorado, without state knife law preemption a significant number of municipalities in Colorado currently still ban switchblades mirroring the old state law. Among them is the state’s largest city, Denver, as well as Aurora, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Lakewood. No doubt others do as well and this patchwork of local bans is potentially waiting to trap unwary knife carriers.

No legal test yet.

I have a Model 8 4 in the fighter design. All black with silver spacers and black sheath. I carry it everyday and I have protected myself with it one unfortunate night with my wife. I’d rather not elaborate, but we were in Chicago and walking to our hotel after a late night dinner. Needless to say, we were jumped by a desperate individual. I believe my Randall saved our lives.

Re: Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/21/17 11:14 PM

I think this topic is interesting and I also think it's being discussed in the wrong thread. It should have a thread of it's own.
Back on topic: I agree with Warren as one worthy candidate is the GTR! Model #10's a great and I carry one quite often..."BUT"...(Here it comes)...your hand will cramp up using one for any extended period of time. GTR: Not so much. The #21 was also mentioned and almost identical in size but a much more singular-usage blade design, i.e. "skinner"!
The Model #27, Minis, as was mentioned is a killer EDC also. You have to ask yourself, not only "what" but "why". What you carry should be predicated on "why" am I using this knife...the majority of the time.
As Rod suggested, a small camp & trail (3/16" stock and a 4" blade) is a perfect "all-around" blade shape...and choice. A trout & bird is almost identical in size and weight but limited, by legalities, in many states due to the top edge being sharpened!
To the original poster, thanks for your question and apologies for "forum-sidetrack" which often happens. I would be interested as to your "intent" for this knife. It would make my (and others) suggestions more minimalized and user-specific.
Great topic: I have over 3 dozen Randall knives that I actually "use" and often.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

All excellent points Cap. A Model 5-4" with a pouch sheath would be the perfect EDC, if available with the pouch sheath, in my humble opinion.

Regarding knife laws in different locations across the country, Knife Rights actively works to get legislation repealed or adopted in favor of knife owners.

They also have an app that helps to guide users through the laws in 50 states and 40 cities. The app can be found at: https://kniferights.org/resources/legal-blade/ .

In general, it is best to carry a knife that is conservatively permitted under the law wherever you are in order to try and avoid adverse reactions from the public as well as perhaps zealous law enforcement officers. And if asked by an officer why you are carrying a knife, you should never reply "for self defense" since in many places this would then qualify the knife as a weapon--which is generally prohibited.

Sometimes, the display of a knife can be out of place. In a corporate setting, I was sitting in a meeting when an engineer pulled out a large pocket knife and proceeded to trim a fingernail. Even though I owned knives that would put his to shame, my reaction was one of surprise and thinking that this was not the place for such a knife to be flaunted.

If done in many situations, such a display can lead to complaints by members of the public who might feel "threatened." Consider New York City where the police arrest people carrying otherwise legal knives that expose a pocket clip--the law allows them to assert that it is a "display" of a threatening nature. Lots of people have paid fines for carrying such knives, and I suspect they then have a criminal record. Knife Rights has taken this on, but I am not sure they have won out yet.

Capt. Chris and Pap--

I agree about the Model 5-4, and have a couple of nice ones I bought from you-know-who.

I also like the Mini-27. It is small, fits into a custom left-side pouch sheath, and pretty enough that the ladies won't run scared if they see it.

Then--depending on what is allowed wherever you are, and if you are looking for more performance like breaking through doors or whatever--there is the Model 28 Woodsman. Substantial construction without as much bulk as its cousin the Model 15, and it carries gently in a Kydex sheath.

I have had a 10-3 that I carry in my gear bag on a daily basis. In addition to mainly opening up and breaking down boxes, I also use it for dressing out game birds.

Recently, I have picked up a Model 8 and a 26, either one would suffice for EDC, but my primary use for those will be for hunting. My next acquisition will be a Model 5-4 and I think that will be my knife of choice for all around every day packing.

Larry -

Never heard such nonsense.

I would venture to say 99.9% of the people that saw a clip, if they even noticed it, wouldn't suspect it was a knife. I also don't think 99.9% of the folks walk around fearing a knife attack.

This is all contrived liberatard politician bullshit.

FYI, it wouldn't have bothered me that your co-worker displayed the knife particularly, what would have bothered me is the poor manners he exhibited by cleaning/trimming his nails during the meeting! I find that in extremely poor taste. WTF?!?

Jon,

That is a tough call. The 26 has a thicker blade profile from the hilt to the tip, but my 8 has a thicker piece of stag for the handle.

I would feel equally at home with either one working on a mule deer. I guess it would come down to what your intended use is and if you need the top edge (Model 8) sharpened or not (Model 26).

So based on the above, if I had to choose only one for EDC, I think I would split the difference and go with the Model 5-4 as I think it is the best of both worlds.

Re: Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/23/17 02:35 AM

Question: does the top edge of the #8 come "sharp" from Factory, or just ready to be sharpened.
I ask because it is illegal to import a Double edged knife to N.Z. and the definition is not as We knife collectors view it i.e. Dagger style.
Customs can "interpret" things differently, as they choose on the day.

Yes 2 inches of the top of the blade is sharpened.

Re: Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/23/17 08:26 AM

Crutch--

You are right about the 99.9%. It is not the general public that is "apprehensive" about exposed knife clips. It is a law on the books that is used as an excuse for the police to make arrests and the courts to pass sentences and levy fines. Knife Rights is challenging this, with some thousands of arrests having been made to date.

Re: Good Randall EDC small Knife? Any suggestions? - 11/23/17 08:37 AM

I gotta be frank here, I didn't realize there were concerns about "knife rights", or anything along those lines. I didn't realize there are apparently more than a few areas in the USA that actually have ownership restrictions. Who woulda thunk anyone in the land of the free and home of the brave, would actually care .

It doesn't surprise me that restrictions are there to generate revenue.

That is what sucks about government. They rarely look at ways to cut costs (changing somewhat with Trump) but only look for sources of new revenue.

That's what I am thinking. I feel that the sharpened top edge on the 8 is useful for chopping off fish or bird heads and other tasks. I have a 5-5 coming to see how it compares.

I agree, can't go wrong with the Model 5, no matter what the blade length. And you can sharpen the top edge if you want. I have one with the top edge sharpened and I like it.
