Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/08/17 06:16 PM

Blade Show Bowie Build,
Ok Crew: It's time for part 2 of our Blade Show trilogy of builds. I have been waiting for an order to come in so that I could show you a couple of good examples of Bowies, made from wood out of The Captain;s "STASH". They are different in options somewhat but may help to guide us along...or not??
I will attach a couple of photos of each of these Bowies..."BUT"...(Wow: 1st "but" and we're only on paragraph #2!)...you may or may not use any of these ideas. As always, I'll guide you along during this build but the ultimate decisions as to what we build will be yours!
Thanks to all of you, in advance, for your participation...and PLEASE: If you have any ideas, questions, photos...share them with us!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Shown below are 2 RMK's #12-9", Sportsmans Bowies, both featuring the #14 grind and stainless steel blades. Handles are:
* Amboyna Burl
* Spalted Maple Burl
Enjoy...Capt. Chris

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/08/17 06:34 PM

The 14/18 style hilt, with 14 style finger grips is a good fit with 12/9-#14 grind. The 12/9 looks great How ever it is dressed.

Taking a quick break from LLWS,
Great looking 12-9's.
I been thinking 25 handle with Bog Oak center.
Different and awesome!!!
Back to the game Louisiana and Texas.

I like BP's idea for a set up.
In keeping with my personal life goals of NOT owning knives taller than me I won't have any interest in the 1. But I will play along and enjoy the knowledge gained on this build.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/09/17 11:22 AM

This's cruel James, but you left yourself open.
"Not owning knives taller than me", is that why you only own 10-3's.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/09/17 12:56 PM

I do not Walter, sorry. By the way, N-25 or B-25 handle configuration is doable...but "why"? $75.00 option charge to install my CW (customer's wood) and add another $70.00 for a "Trapper" handle, cutting the wood in half and not being able to see it all??
Just sayin', Capt. Chris

So, are we talking overall length or blade only? This could have a major impact on my future RMK purchases. ;-)

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/09/17 02:04 PM

Sooner or later...we'll get back on subject. No hurry, "but", when we do. How about a "ROLL CALL VOTE". Vote for one and one only:
A) RMK Model #12-9", Sportsmans Bowie
B) #12-9"-#14 grind Sportsmans Bowie
A vote for "A" will yield us a traditional Bowie, i.e. BCP top edge and is available in "carbon steel only"!
A vote for "B" will yield a Bowie with a Model #14 (Attack) shaped blade (top edge), i.e. straight top edge, just like the 2 I posted photos of in this build's opener. Also: Carbon steel (standard) as well as Stainless steel ($75.00 option) are both doable on the #14 blade grind..."&"...I don't care "what" we make!
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: James has talked to me about a "Tailors Knife"...just sayin'...CCS

And while I like BP's Model 25 idea (love the vintage look of the Model 25 handles), the Capt. is right...doing so would certainly lessen/diminish the size (and visual impact) of the beautiful piece of bog oak.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/09/17 05:09 PM

I think the traditional Bowie top edge would be great--and how about a forward-curved hilt? (It looks pretty nice on my 12-9 with thuya burl in Border Patrol shape.)

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/09/17 05:17 PM

Both of your Bowies are not the traditional grind Steve. It may add to the confusion as these are "both" #14 grinds. Notice the straight top edge?

I realize that, Captain--I've been stuck on stainless for a while, and that's why I think the traditional top edge would be perfect for this build.

Rob,
The choice for the knife you prefer is available and one of the "3" listed.
Model #12-9", #14 grind, in carbon steel gives you the straight clip point (#14 style) but also let's you have carbon. I'll build any on them. If it was just love of the dollar I'd want everybody to go with the $75.00 option of stainless..."BUT"...( & this is a really big "but")...I want everyone to also "learn" from the builds. All choices are available, except you cannot request the Randall shop to make the traditional Bowie clip (concaved, if you will) in stainless. That's a "no".
Is everyone getting this?

Yes, I'm aware that #14 grind is available in SS *and* carbon (O1?) steel.

The way this (re-)poll is set up, carbon #14 grind is a non-starter due to how everyone else is voting, so I threw my vote to SS #14 grind. "Lesser of two evils" type of voting (much like our political system). wink

If I ever had a *real* beef with any way the vote goes, I'd just pass on the build lottery, ring up one of the fine RMK dealers, order similar knife "my way." cool

... but we have yet to get to that point (and probably never will), so it's all good.

FWIW, I hope I didn't imply that you were baking the polls for love or money, that wasn't my point at all.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/17/17 09:49 PM

Billy, I believe that you're correct.

I think that these are the options used if we were to go with Tony's suggestions:
1. Stainless steel blade.
2. Customer supplied handle material/bog oak wood.
3. FC NS hilt (Or is this the standard hilt on this knife? The catalog description notes a FC NS hilt as standard, but the description states that a brass lugged is standard.).
4. Non-standard spacers (Aluminum and black).
5. Commando handle shape (Or is this the standard handle shape on this knife? The catalog notes a 'standard' handle shape for this knife, but the extra features page states that a commando handle shape is standard for all Model 12s other than the 12-6.).
6. Duraluminum butt cap.
Posted by: Chief

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/17/17 10:34 PM

FCH is standard
Commando is standard
14 grind isn't a chargeable option it's a blade choice.

That's why I say all black spacers to save a option.
plus better to have the cuffs & collars match, not a fan of hilt & butt being different materials just to have metal spacers.
Posted by: TonyLaPetri

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/25/17 03:05 PM

OK Crew:
So far...we are building:
* Randall Model #12-9", #14 grind
* Stainless steel blade (Option #1)
* Nickel silver hilt (Option #2)
We know one of our remaining 3 options is the custom bog oak being used for handle. Let's talk out the other "2". I got no dog in this fight & have no preference as to what we decide. Many have thought a solid nickel silver butt cap would look good. That would leave "1" other option. A nickel silver collar would use us up.
If we eliminate the butt cap you would have more latitude and leave the natural end of the wood to appreciate but sacrifice the heavy handle feel, brought about by the nickel silver butt cap. Lots to think about.
You're next!
Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/25/17 03:20 PM

Nickel silver butt cap pretty much necessary, IMO.

Commando handle shape (freebie option, yes?)

NS collar wouldn't suck in this build, but obviously eats last option

all black spacers wouldn't be too bad, either.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/25/17 03:57 PM

•Black and Aluminum Spacers. (Option 4)
•Commando Shaped Handle.
•Solid Nickel Silver Butt Cap (Option 5)

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/25/17 05:56 PM

Don't like the butt cap. You lose too much of the grain. Butt plate would be better or none at all. Coolie cap would work too.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 08/25/17 08:59 PM

I may have missed it ......but what's the hilt style going to be?

I would go with all black or red spacers.
If know butt cap or plate then a 14 style handle like the Captain posted. Is that handle 1 option?
I also like a border patrol with a butt cap like these.

Rob,
That's it! Although this option is non-chargeable, a squared top hilt (old style) is a nice option, especially when ordering a N-25 (NS/Aluminum) or a B-25 (Brass) Model #25 (Trapper) handle option.

OK Crew: We need to start building this bad boy! We know what we "have" decided...just not necessarily "how". Nickel silver hilt seems like the most logical choice, as we work our way back, to address next. There are many hilt choices. Let's hammer out a short list. How about this: Tell us all what hilt you prefer...and "why" and we'll narrow it down to the top "3".
Thanks, Capt. Chris

I would love to have the FCH not be a chargeable option on the model 1.

Well...Crew:
We've run aground and astray, getting ahead of ourselves, once again. The request was to talk about "hilts" and your arguement for or against one or the other. Instead we have moved farther towards the read end of this knife and talked about butt caps, plates, engraving and the like...(ugh)! Here's what I have deciphered, thus far. Top 3 choices "seem" to be:
A) Nickel silver/ FCH
B) Nickel silver #1 (or #2, same thing) shape
C) Nickel silver #14 (or #18, same thing)
No special request or defense of the single hilts, although they are bomb,,,they're "out the door" for this build anyway.
.................ROLL CALL VOTE..............Vote for "1":
A) FCH
B) #1 style hilt
C) #14 style hilt

Just a "FYI". #1 hilts and no butt caps greatly reduces the over all weight, verses the other 2. FCH leaves more room for your hand on the handle..."BUT"...(You "knew" it was coming)...the handle on a #12-9" is long enough anyway?? They'll all look dynamite, just depends on your taste. I'll give this through the weekend, then the vote gets tallied and we move onward (& backwards) toward the butt end.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Just back home from helping Captain Chris de-Hurricane proof his house... great day over all . To say he is "swamped" in stuff is an absolute understatement....

On a personal note... considering what "we" as a forum have going on "against" us, outside of this build, is nothing short of heartbreaking. That this build is even being pushed along is , well I will just not finish that sentence. That's for the best.
But since some of us "need" to keep this going I reckon we should... cause THAT'S what's important here... MY FEELINGS... NOT Captain Chris'

He asked me to toss up a quick total and he will get in later and move us forward on the build. Here ya go Captain...

A. FCH Has 9 votes

C. #14 style has 8

Looks like we should go forward with the FCH since it is 1 up on votes.

OK:
Model #12-9", #14 grind
* Add a stainless blade
* Add a nickel silver forward curved hilt
* Add the custom bog oak handle
Let's figure out the handle shape (if any) and spacers (or collar) and put this puppy to bed! I will be on the road to South Florida today. I will be leaving tomorrow sometime (or Tuesday, at the latest) to visit my Mississippi Brothers who are going through their own personal "Hell" right now.
Furthermore: I am scheduled for the Tallahassee gun & knife show next weekend...which has to be cancelled in light of all the crap that's going on of late! I will post up, when I have the opportunity but cannot say exactly when that will be. It is an excellent time for all of us to reflect on what is "really" important in our lives, give thanks for what we have and pray for a calming, tranquil outcome on things we have no control over.
If all of this sounds a little vague...it is. At the requests of people I love and care about, this is the limits to which I will post at this time....and please: Patience everyone. A lot of hurt out there, right now.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

OK Crew,
Due to Dr's restrictions and other $..t going on right now, I'm land-locked until the end of next week!
Can we decide on spacers for this knife? If we do not use a butt cap (or even if we do) aluminum spacers (with either red or black fiber insulators) are a good choice.
A nickel silver smooth collar is also in the running and there will be no coloration variances from the NS hilt. It is, however much more expensive as an option: $20.00 for Alum. verses $65.00 for a nickel silver collar.
I know a portion of our crew likes all black spacers and that (or red, white & blue spacers) is a "no charge" option as well! Just something else to discuss.
I, in no way, want to influence the vote..."&"...as ya'll have heard from me way too many times: "I don't care what we build"! ................"BUT".............(Guess I'm not as sick as I let on (Good Tombstone quote)......please ask yourself this question. "Is this knife going to be used or coveted"?
My guess is this knife will not be a user. 5 options is our limit. Do you want fiber spacers, affording a butt cap (also covering up and reducing the amount of bog oak used) or do you want metal spacers, of some sort, and leave the butt alone?
All good points and your responses and eventual votes will determine the outcome. Let's take the weekend to "air our point of view"...ROLL CALL VOTE will come Monday Night, just before my buddy Hank, Jr. sings!!
Talk it over,
Capt. Chris
PS: We still have "other" issues/options to discuss (handle shape, etc.)...CCS

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 09/23/17 03:37 PM

I vote for a collar & a border patrol handle, or finger grips or SFG.
The way I view it is if you are going to use a option on spacers go big or as The Captain put it, "either red or black fiber insulators".

Or for the those liking a butt Cap.
Nickel silver butt All Black spacers, SFG, Finger grips or border Patrol handle.

* Randall Model #12-9", #14 grind
* Stainless steel blade
* Nickel silver double hilt
* Forward curved hilt
* Smooth nickel silver collar
* CW-Bog Oak
Commando-shaped handle is a non-chargeable configuration. Any "other" handle shape is chargeable. What would you prefer?

Border patrol or finger grips, SFG I like all 3 for showing off good looking wood.

I agree with Chief but of those 3, the SFG gets the nod on a big blade.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/06/17 06:36 AM

OK Crew,
Here's what we're doing. It was difficult to tally the votes: Warren voted twice. Chief voted for all 3 (+) 1 more vote?? Gotta' love it! After filtering, we have this knife...and it is a "Dandy"!

* Randall Model #12-9", #14 grind
* Stainless steel
* Nickel silver double hilt
* Forward curved hilt
* CW-BOG OAK!
* Single finger grip
.....Thanks to all for the participation. All that is left is the leftovers! Let's talk about the Model C sheath. Not a roll call...at least, not yet, but here are your options.
* Standard Model C sheath, tan leather
* Model C sheath, upgraded to waxed leather
* Model C sheath, upgraded to black leather
The upgrades add to the cost: $10 for waxed, $30 for black. We can also request a hone pocket (standard) or a "NHS" (no hone sheath) which is an option..."BUT"...(I feel better already)...not a chargeable option. Let's talk it over!
On a personal note: I'll be a little "out of pocket" for a couple of days. I am having (in an hour and a half) steroid shots in my spine! (How fun is that? ... Right?) In the meantime:
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

I had 1 shot Wednesday Cap....on each side of the lumbar area...L3 & L4 to be specific. And a "larger dose than usual", as she said. I last splept about 0400 on Wed. It's really SWEEEET..... This follows radio frequency ablation last week....cervical & lumbar area.
BUT, gotta' keep moving.....harder to hit. Good luck to 'ya my friend.

A waxed sheath is not only practical, the darker color will make the wood stand out nicely!

No Hone would be a "cleaner" look.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/06/17 06:03 PM

Standard Model C sheath in tan leather with hone pocket for me. It's a classic for a reason!

I'm not a big fan of the look of a waxed sheath, and it always feels tacky to my touch. I understand the advantage of the waxed sheath in heavy brush/forest, but I'm not seeing this 'bog oak beast' as a user (does anyone regularly use a forum build knife that they won?).

As far as the hone pocket, I really like the look of them on the sheath. For those RMKs that I use, I usually remove the stone and replace it with a Leatherman Micra which fits very nicely in the hone pocket.

Ronnie sounds a bit stressed...maybe 'cause he is afraid somebody else might latch onto his knife!

Can't blame him--anybody who like 12-9s would love to pick this one up.

Collars don't usually "do it for me" (without being engraved), this one is an exception.

Very nice.

Love the knife but hate the sheath. How in the world does this happen? It’s the second time it has happened to me. KNIFE DOES NOT FIT IN THE SHEATH!

Big handle wider FCH than usual be my guess.

Or a long blade. I have had several go long or short from stock lengths.

Ronnie,
I'll be glad to give you the money back on it and it will stay
in Mississippi.

The shop set the snap. I bet it will fit, probably just verrry tight.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/13/18 07:38 PM

It will not fit. Tried forcing it.
I plan to send it to Vince Peloza and have him make a sheath for it.
His Sheaths are like the old Maurice Johnson Sheaths. Beautiful.

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/13/18 07:39 PM

It isn’t the strap....it won’t go all the way in the sheath.

Ronnie,

Don't panic, the shop will make it right. Take a breather bro.

You couldn't see about getting a replacement through Capt. .. BEFORE throwing a fit on the forum? ?? I'm sure he'll make it right. ..

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/13/18 09:34 PM

Sorry Ronnie, but it fit when it left the shop...bend the back of the sheath away from the blade some and see if that helps...also first two pics show knife in backwards...

Warren there is no panic.....no panic at all. I don’t plan on sending it back. The sheath sucks and anything they send me to replace it will suck. I am just disappointed that this has happened....twice.

Scott there are pictures showing the knife in both ways. (I know the correct way to stick a Randall in it’s sheath.) I posted all the photos to show that It wouldn’t fit.

Ronnie,
Upset or not, I do not see the need for all of this. You have made it very clear, over the past decade or so, of your preference for JRB's. This is just more of that. Good luck with your efforts to rectify your unhappiness with this package.
Everyone: Let's keep it civil, please,
Capt. Chris
PS: It is a helluva' knife...CCS

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/14/18 09:33 AM

It seems that the shop could not have set the snap if they did not get the knife into the sheath.

Maybe...it could be put up for sale here on the forum, and one of us will be quick enough to pick it up.

P.S.: The thickness of the guard can meet resistance against the sheath as the knife is pushed down into place. Hence DW's suggestion to bend the sheath back to make it flex at the throat. The sheaths are stiff and can take some "wearing in."

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/14/18 09:36 AM

I wouldn't call this whiny if indeed the knife went out NOT fitting like that, but unless the wax (if a waxed) in the sheath had settled, which we have sometimes...but there is no way this left this bad of a fit...just no way...must be other semantics some where...

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/14/18 04:51 PM

Bent it, stretched it, flexed it and finally said to heck with it.

WoW!!!
miss a thread for a couple days, and all hell breaks out....

Randall Made knife....Randall sheath....haven't they been fitting for years??
I suppose I'd just send it back to the shop, to make sure nothing was missed...stuff does happen...
my $.02....hope I don't have to stick this comment in my ear...

Re: Blade Show BOWIE Building Big-Un! - 10/14/18 07:41 PM

What's crummy is that we have to deal with somebody that is not next door. It's a giant pain in the but to have to pack it up, take to the shipper, and then pay for shipping....what's good is that we get to deal with the shop directly...you don't get that everywhere!!
So, sucks, but send it back!! you need the sheath to fit even if you do buy another...we all just rent these...and it will increase the resale value if both sheaths fit...

Everyone,
I do not want "anyone" to "ever" be unhappy with a Randall Made Knife they bought from me..."EVER"! I will pay all shipping & insurance costs involved for "anyone" who needs to send a knife back to me..."BUT"...
* It has to come to me if it was bought from me!
* There has to be a "legitimate" reason for sending it back!
I will credit anyone for a knife they "just don't like" but will not include the shipping costs involved in getting it back to me.
.........."HOWEVER"........In this case, I was never given this opportunity to be included in the "Bitch Session", just found out about all of it, through these forums.
Offer still stands,
Capt. Chris

Ronnie
If you don't like the sheath, why buy it and then get on this forum and b%*ch about it.
If there is something wrong I have no doubt that the Capt. or DW will make it right if you would give them a chance.
Great knife!!
