Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/03/17 01:22 PM

Good day, crew:
It's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work! I promised you some form of "Blade Show Participation" & here comes more of it! Especially for the folks who were unable to make it to the show, these builds will allow a possibility for you to take a piece of it home with you. Of course, crew members are not limited to "Blade Show-N- Shows"! All are welcome to join in.
At the end of 10 days we will have completed all the plans for this 1st-of-3 Blade Show Builds! That's right: 10 days! I suggest that we compress the time that we usually take to complete a build and try to finish "all 3" within a one month window!! I will do the best I can to keep the projects rolling and will act as the "tie-breaker" if any one segment is slowing the build(s) down!
Now: Let's start with Build "A", a Model #7, set up for kitchen and fishin' chores! I would "think" this build is gonna' go along a stainless blade's route but we'll see. Step one is simple: "ROLL CALL VOTE"!! Vote for one of the following:
A) Stainless steel blade
B) Carbon steel blade
....One vote per crew member and it'll be tallied and called on Friday, July 7th!! Thanks to all, in advance, for your cooperation. Please feel free to, not only cast your vote, but plea your case for your reason to vote the way you did!
Best and good luck, Capt. Chris

A. Stainless steel blade.

Enhanced corrosion resistance of stainless is a 'must' for a knife which may be exposed to a salt water environment or the acids/alkalines of general kitchen duties.

Happy Independence Day to all!

Let's move on crew. Stainless it'll be. Now, for a more differing opinion. We can take a day or two and discuss the following:
* 4 1/2" blade
* 5" blade
* Standard grind
* #6 grind
All have merit but I know what "I" would pick. How about you?
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Capt., thanks for the photos. Very helpful to see the difference in the lengths and grinds.

By the way: Happy 4th of July to all of you! Being as it is the holiday, I will not "make the call" on the choices we have, so far. Having said that: Below is a couple of pics of a pair of knives, which I have featured in prior posts. Made up at different times but "used" together, and/or in tandem, this pair has seen some serious usage over a couple of decades...(or better)!
Keep in mind, crew: A RMK Model #7-5", #6 grind, in stainless, with amboyna uses up "3" options! We only have "2" options left if this is how we are going...(just sayin')

OK Crew:
So far:
* RMK Model #7-5"
* #6 grind
* Stainless steel
* Handle made from Amboyna Burl
......We need to spend a couple of days figuring out the "rest". Of course, red, white & blue spacers are the standard configuration. We can do all black at no additional charge. We can do aluminum & black for an extra few bucks..."but"..it uses up option #4! Thumb notches? If so, that's out last option.
We also need to address a brass single hilt (standard) or nickel silver, along with anything else ya'll might want. Let's all voice our opinion and then, Monday night, I'll call for votes.
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: Below: Model #7-5", #6 grind, stainless blade, nickel silver single hilt, aluminum & red spacers, lignum vitae handle (from The Captain's STASH), wrist thong and a model "B" sheath, NHS (No hone sheath)...CCS

Not going to be a big knife so you don't need a counter weight, so if you like the wood might as well leave it off.

- thumb notches

Back From Bama:
How about a "ROLL CALL VOTE". This will decide a lot...once and for all! If we vote brass in for the hilt, we still have 2 options available to us, i.e. possibilities like brass & black spacers, wrist thong, etc. A "Yeah" for nickel silver leaves us only one option left to play with. I don't care where we go and I know that there are a lot of you out there that are satisfied to settle for all black (or red, white & blue) spacers, but we need to be forward-thinking about this hilt. Talk it over,,,,"BUT",,,(aah...I feel much better now) we can't go backwards and this vote will count and be the final decision on hilt. This whole build will be completed by week's end!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

A) Brass single hilt
Posted by: rfcarlin

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/13/17 02:36 PM

I've already voted for brass so please don't count this as another vote.

As I noted when I voted, I usually prefer nickel silver hardware. Easier to clean, less maintenance, and I like the contrast that its lighter/more neutral color provides, especially when paired with darker handle material.

Given the deep golden color of the Amboyna, however, it is my humble opinion that a brass single hilt with brass and black spacers (4th option) and a matching brass butt cap (5th option if I counted correctly) is the way we should finish this knife.

Why?

First, I don't see this knife as a user. These forum build knives are really cool and 'unique' (especially so for these with CW from Blade; Thanks Capt.!), and I don't think that I could bring myself to use one of them. If I did see it as a user, I would've voted for a NS hilt, and would endorse thumb notches or a thong hole for the fifth and final option.

Second, the brass at front and rear would enhance (as Tony pointed out earlier) and perfectly complement the beauty of the Amboyna, and the knife would, overall, be more aesthetically balanced and pleasing.

Third (and final), I showed my wife the photo of the Amboyna, and she fully endorses my 'brass design' as outlined above. It's OK to laugh at that, but: 1) she owns a ceramic/glass studio and spends a good chunk of her time designing color schemes for folks to paint; and, much more importantly, 2) if I end up winning the drawing for the knife, there will be no need for me to have to justify spending the money on "another" RMK (and those of you married for many years can well understand how beneficial that can be!).

Does adoption of the 'brass design' mean that we end up with a "safe queen"? Probably so, but a safe queen of surpassing beauty that would demand to be put on display.

I have learned the hard way that a heavy butt cap on a light knife ruins the balance and "feel" of the knife. If a butt cap is decided, then I hope extra thin, or simply a butt plate, rather than a full-size butt cap.
Posted by: RamKingJC

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/13/17 05:59 PM

Cap is not a good option with custom woods... IMO... there's no real sense in covering up such a pretty piece of wood with a cap or plate... however we are also not there yet. So we will see how it shakes out.

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/13/17 06:04 PM

Good arguments, all of them..."BUT"...for now...Brass it is!
So far:
* RMK Model #7-5 inch
* #6 blade grind (Option #1)
* Stainless steel (Option #2)
* Brass single hilt (Standard)
* CW: Amboyna Burl (Option #3)
....Over the weekend we'll decide the rest of the option list, if any are chosen. I agree with Steve about the thin brass butt cap, if it is elected. I would also add that having it "rounded" would further reduce the weight. Thanks for helping with this build, so far. We need to decide on spacers and some good ideas have already been brought forth.
I'll check back and if you have any questions crew: Please feel free to ask away. I spent 4 1/2 hours driving in tropical depression winds-n-rain and another hour and a half in various "non-social" positions for an intense open MRI. I'm "on break" as they say til later...

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/13/17 07:18 PM

If we're discussing next options, then how about brass collar (this endorses Bob Carlin's idea of brass hilt looking great with wood handle) ...and what about thumb notches?
If not thumb notches, then I go along with Tony LaPetri's brass/red spacers.

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/13/17 07:52 PM

With beautiful wood, and weight being an important consideration, leaving the butt end untouched makes the most sense to me. If everyone decides otherwise, I hope it's only a plate. With the butt left alone, options can be spent elsewhere.
Posted by: Duke

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/14/17 01:31 AM

All red spacers(not counted as an option)
TN (#4)
WT (#5)
The above options are neither exciting nor sexy but are very functional IF you plan this to be a user. Different to live in/on the safe/display.
AND.....why cover up Amboyna's beautiful butt?

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 07/15/17 10:13 AM

OK Crew,
A lot of suggestions, considering the limited subject. Here's a couple of "thinkers" to aid in your decision.
* Voting for brass hilts saves an option
* Brass spacers will leave the handle "fuller"
* Brass collars are available "smooth" or "scalloped"
* Brass butt caps will make the handle a little heavy
* Yes,,,,Even "thin" butt caps
* OK...I'm done
Think about this choice. We can't remove anything once the knife is completed. Chief (& others) make a valid point about the wood being compromised (looks-wise) with anything on the butt end of this magnificent handle. Having stated all of this, unless you need sunglasses to shade your eyes after coming out from under your "rock", you should know by now that I don't care "what" we build! Ya'll decide!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Listen! Really!
I just re-read this build, making my list of eligible crew members for the numbers drawing. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with the response from all of you, with regards to this build...and: For that, I thank you! We have not had this kind of response in years! Well done...and a very well done build, with regards to exactly "what" we are building for one lucky crew member!
Just in case you are new to the next (and final) step in our build, I will recap it now. I am going to post 50 numbers for your favorite number choices. 1-50 will be available to the crew. Numbers will be assigned on a 1st come/1st served basis. You will post up your "top 3" number picks, in order of preference. I will list your forum name, next to your number. In 1 week, i.e. next Saturday evening (OK: Not "quite" 1 full week) I will chose the winner's number, via "RANDOM" computer-generated number process. That winner has the option to purchase this knife! If that 1st choice refuses or declines (for whatever reason?) we will take number pick #2...and so on until a crew member wins.
This build has gone quite well. Do we all get along and agree with "everything"? Of course not. Did we build a killer Randall Made Knife? Of course we did! Here's what we're building:

* Randall Model #7-5 inch
* The "Fisherman-Hunter" Model
* Hand forged stainless steel blade
* Special forging, #6 blade grind
* Thumb notches
* Brass single hilt
* Brass smooth collar
* CW (Customer's wood supplied)
* Box Elder, purchase at this year's (2017) Blade Show
* Model B sheath, waxed leather option!
We can still decide on a squared-top hilt and a hone, verses no hone sheath configuration but that will be decided on by the winner of this build! Thanks again for a great build crew! I couldn't do it without you.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Thank you Captain Chris, thank you all.
It was very interesting to read =)

I will take part, a two week ago I had to fight a little,
I used my flashlight as a Yavara, so the numbers will
be from him corps, in a row, that are less than 50 smile

## 47; 15; 12

The one who will win, will get a wonderful knife!

Crew:
Everyone please double-check to see if they are numbered correctly, per your requests. I am having a new starboard lens @ 6:30 AM at the Opthalmologists's surgery center. I probably will not be tackling this stuff for a couple of days.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 12/14/18 01:38 PM

The knife just arrived, looks great but somewhere in the process the smooth collar turned into the scalloped collar. Wood is terrific.
Thanks Capt Chris and crew for another great build

Re: Blade Show Model #7-10 day build - 12/14/18 02:08 PM

Peter,
The scalloped collar, verses the smooth collar is no one's fault but mine! I entered code: SC (You'd think that's smooth collar...right?). "SC" is the code for a "scalloped" collar. "SCS" is the proper code for a "smoothie"!
As I told you on the phone: I'll make this right. I know you want to think about it but it can be taken care of, I promise. Of course, a different piece of wood will have to be supplied but that's on me...not you...(How about ironwood?)
Let me know?
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Peter,

Congratulations!

It's a beauty for sure with the box elder, and I'm also partial to the scalloped, as opposed to smooth, collar.

WOW! Great knife.
Not a fan of scalloped collars but it sure looks good with that beautiful pice of wood. Thats why I like these builds. It opens your eyes to other possibilities.
Thanks Capt. for another great Build.
