Blade Show "BUILD" - 05/22/17 05:38 PM

OK Crew,
The last build was completed, of course: not delivered...but completed...in 90 days. How about a build that we have "never" done before? A "Blade Show Build"!! Now: What in the hell do you think I mean by that? I'll entertain a few guesses before we have any kind of vote (aka: Roll Call)...This could be much fun...

I can dream about an ironwood Ward Gay, but I know it isn't likely

I am now thinking that it is something in your latest order to be available at the Blade show

Blade Show Build-

RMK & BMK Set of knives with Mudbone Paired Sheath!

That would be a pretty good build. To be drawn at the RKCC meeting at Blade.

Re: Blade Show "BUILD" - 05/23/17 03:41 PM

OK Crew:
It's been a total blast reading your guesses. A couple came fairly close...but "no cigar"!! Here's what I have in mind...and it will be up to you, the Crew, to vote this idea into reality...or "not"!!
A great many of you, despite my pleading cannot ( or will not) be attending this year's Blade show. For those who cannot I want you to feel (somewhat) included. As many already know I have very little, if any time to spare at the Blade show. It is, quite singularly, the busiest, most stressful, yet exciting show of the year!
I am setting up "3 times" as many personal displays, in the lobby on our club tables this year, in an effort to recruit new members and educate customers attending this year's Blade show! For "all of the above" reasons, I will be "slammed"!
Thursday afternoon and Friday morning may allow me a bit of time to get away from the club tables, my booth, the general madhouse...and "shop". I will also be calling into service: Billy, Ken, James, Becky, Chief, Wally, Lori, etc., etc., etc. to "help" me shop. Scott will be there to lend a hand as well...I am sure!
Here's the "layout" (as we have no building plans at this time):
* I am going to build 3 RMKs
* Each one will be a different "type", i.e. serve a different purpose
* Choices will come from RMK catalog models, non-catalog models or one of my Stanaback Specials!
* Those special purposes will be determined by "me".
* I will buy "CW" to chose from for these 3 builds!
* There will be multiple choices for each category!
* All handle material will be voted on and chosen by you, the Crew!
* All options for these knives will be chosen by you, the Crew!
* All 3 knives will be completed and exhibited at the 2018 Blade Show, at the club meeting and the club display tables.
* There will be our usual drawing from the winners of each build...just like always.
* All other build rules apply!
So........CREW:.......ROLL CALL VOTE........Vote for one:
A) Hell yeah, I'm in!
B) Dumbest idea I've ever heard of! Count me out!
C) Yes: It's dumb. But I'm "in" anyway!

That is quite a scheme! I don't envy you the joy of managing all of it.

But I will play, since this is some of the cheapest entertainment to be had by knife guys. And then somebody gets to own some special knives that might not have been put together otherwise.

Re: Blade Show "BUILD" - 05/25/17 09:18 AM

BLADE SHOW BUILDS...........................

Well then: CREW,
Apparently, with one possible exception, we are (officially) a "GO"!! Here's how this will work. "Most" of the decision-making will come from you, as always, on these 3 knives. "Some" will have to be made by me, being the location and limited internet access and time (of course)...."BUT"...It all starts :
....................HERE AND NOW..................
We are going to build 3 Randall knives, each to be the majority-choice (voted on by you) of each and every category. I will list the 3 categories and several Randall model options for each. We will vote those groups of knives down to one...and one "only"...for each category. I will "shop-the-floor" at Blade and come up with some "killer" handle options (believe me on this) for us to vote on for each category.
Now then: From that point, I will separate the builds into 3 individual builds and we will conduct them, as is usual. Anyone who contributes to any build will be eligible to enter their name and a number guess into any of the builds. You can opt out of any that don't fit your pistol or go for all "3"! I hope this will be fun...cause I know it's gonna' be work! Good luck to all of you crew...and let's get rollin'...!!!

We are building the following: 1 knife for each purpose (or group):

A) Hunting/Camp Knife
B) Fishing/Kitchen Knife
C) Fighting/Prepper Knife

Here's what we have to chose from:

A) For hunting knife that will also serve you well around the camp for light chores, I have narrowed the field to:
1) Model #3
2) Model #4
3) Model #5
4) Model #11
5) Model #20
6) Model #23
7) Model #25
8) Model #27-5 3/4"
9) Model #28
10) Sergeants
11) Your other choice
B) For a Fishing knife that can handle most kitchen chores we have the following choices:
1) Model #6-4 1/2"
2) Model #7-5", #6 grind
3) Model #4-4 1/2", 5" or 6"
4) Model #10 (any size)
5) Model #21
6) Model #22
7) Model #26
8) Model #6-9", Large Filet
9) Your choice
C) Fighter/Prepper knife (combo) can be all over the place "but" (I know) we have to have some limits so...Here goes:
1) Model #1
2) Model #2
3) Model #3-TB (top bevel sharpened)
4) Model #12 (your choice)
5) Model #14
6) Model #15
7) Model #16 (or #16, Special Fighter)
8) Model #18
9) Model #19
10) Combat Companions (FT or CDT)
11) Stanaback Special- 4 5/8"
12) #4-6-"F"
13) Your choice
.....................ROLL CALL VOTE...............(1 in each category, please)
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Keep in mind Crew: #28's and #10's don't give a whole lot of "fudge" room. That's fine...and, when you're talking custom handles, the #28 is a "no-show".
Best, Capt. Chris

Capt. Chris--

I believe that for any of the exposed tang knives the shop requires Micarta or G-10. I recall Gary telling me once that they will not do stabilized wood, etc., on those models. Makes sense from a durability point of view.

My Choices:
A) Model 23 (I don't recall one being done in a build before)
B) Model 7-5"
C) Model 1 (after all, it was bred for this and has a record of success)

Just a point of order maybe....
When is the last time we used OAK on a knife????

Re: Blade Show "BUILD" - 06/28/17 09:42 PM

That's a good question. I haven't seen oak, pecan or hickory used as a handle material either. Walnut, Osage Orange, sycamore and so on, show up, but not the oaks. Must be a cracking issue.

We have used (or at least, I have) spalted pecan and sycamore in the past.

Re: Blade Show "BUILD" - 06/29/17 12:39 AM

It all depends on the processing of oak, it unfortunately,
often cracked due to temperature and humidity changes.
And it's still bad to make hilt of complex shape - SFG and FG,
in the case where the fibers are straight (as on lignum vitae).
Here the fibers are curved, everything will be fine smile

We need to move on with this process crew. I would suggest that the 1st 2 builds, i.e. both A & B show a clear winner. Let's continue on with Build "C" only, i.e. the Sportsmans Bowie, 9 inch blade handle choices. "ROLL CALL VOTE"...Please vote for one...and "1 ONLY">>>

Build "C"
1) Big Leaf Maple
2) Bog Oak
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: No previous votes count. From here on, these 2 handle materials are a completely new and separate vote...CCS

As much I love me some truly wide flame western maple - after much consideration I will have to go with: Bog Oak
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Blade Show "BUILD" - 06/30/17 07:01 PM

I don't care what we build "BUT" (I know, I know) any talk about this oak splitting should be squelched. Bog oak is as stable as any maple...and: Yes, to earlier questions, it has been stabilized.
Good luck on this vote. No way will there be a loser. Both are great choices and The 'Ol Captain will make the 2nd place finisher into a knife for the "ever-increasing" "STASH"!!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris
