Model 18 Teeth - Question

Model 18 Teeth - Question - 02/17/17 02:34 PM

After just getting my 18 I noticed the front tooth or two does not come up quite to a point like the other teeth. They are blunted a bit.

I know that each of these knives are hand done and all have their own personality traits, but is that a normal one?

Thanks!

No expert here but a photo would help, I am sure that if there is a fault with it then the shop will fix or replace it, but it is unlikely to be a fault if you bought it from them as Scott checks each one before they leave,.

I've got a 16 with teeth on it's way even as I type....I'll take a look when it arrives, which I expect tomorrow, however with my luck, it will be Monday...
It will be my first "saw teeth" knife
post us a photo!! everybody here likes to see knives!!

Ok I will try to get a photo up this evening when I get home from work.

I bought a Randall knowing these minor variances are in play and if it bothers you then buy a diff brand. Just want to make sure this falls under that.....

It's fine and I receive them, just as you described, from time-to-time. Worry about something else. I figure it just reduces chances of the first few teeth getting chipped!!
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

The first couple of teeth are sharpened when we put the final hone on them and draw the appearance that they are "flattened", when in actuality they're just sharp!!

By the way, Jason and my worst cuts that we have had at the shop have come from honing model 18 Sawteeth!!

Re: Model 18 Teeth - Question - 02/17/17 09:33 PM

To add, I can tell you that they are indeed flatter than the other teeth. Yes they are still sharp, but there is no illusion that I can see - they are flatter. Tattoo Bills photo shows this pretty well. In person it can be seen too. Capt Chris also stated he gets some in.

Sounds like it is normal? So gonna move on, but just want to be clear that they are flat(er) than the others.

well, it's not what they would call work, anyway...maybe he just supervises, or something like that...

Be curious what looking down from the top of the teeth shows?
Just a guess but it looks like the edge of the blade is on the top of the tooth in question.

I just looked at a new 1-8 in my stash, the teeth look more uniform. Regardless, many variables go into producing the teeth. Nothing wrong with the first one or two not as uniform as the rest. Some knives have teeth so small you might not notice them at first.

Here's my mid 80s #18. Uniform points.
Just shows that every knife is a bit different.
Didn't DW use to work for Valerie?

I do that every three months. smile

I should give special instructions for RMK to add a note in the box when they ship the knife:

To future me,

You're welcome.

regards, 2017 me.
