Randall Storage - 02/17/17 02:23 PM

Hello,

I just got my first Randall. A model 18 - 7.5. Awesome knife! I have did quite a bit of research prior to purchasing and many say not to store the knife in the sheath, so I don't. When I got it in hand I coated it with oil, wiped it clean then put a coat of Ren wax on it.

My plan, was to put this knife in my go bag. The internal of my bag has molle so I wanted to put the sheath in there along and of course the knife. Since it is not best to do that are there any suggestions? I was thinking of having a custom kydex sheath made, but there seems to be no good source for quality ones for that blade. I also heard the kydex can mar the blade going in and out. While I do not care at if shi* gets real, I want it to remain in lnib shape until that time comes.

Thanks!

If you make your own Kydex sheath to fit the knife then you should be good. So long as you are not taking it in and out all the time, which if it's just sitting in a "GO Bag" that should not be an issue...

C158....if it were in my bag...the knife would be "in the sheath" it's an 18...I would assume that at some point you plan to use it....the sheath would not bother me in the least.....if, you plan on an alternate sheath, then perhaps not. I have several knives that remain in their sheaths.
just my$0.02 worth

Yes, I want it to be in a sheath in my bag. It may sit in there for a long time unless I take it out to look at it. Knowing that the sheath the knife comes with may cause problems for long term storage I am seeking an alternative.

I think somebody would do VERY well making super high quality lined Kydex sheaths for all Randall #'s There seems to be a market for such a thing.

I have come across several used knife ads for Randalls where the seller states "not stored in its sheath" so it would appear to be a common question asked by buyers?

A high-end alternative option would be great.

Is the blade stainless? If so, renwax the blade and don't wipe off the dried wax. slide a piece of paper between the brass hilt and the sheath while inserting the knife in the sheath. the tanning agents in the sheath can cause a reaction with the brass. check it from time to time and you'll be fine.
If the blade is O1 steel, you may get some carbon spots.

Try these for kydex sheaths. The first one makes really nice custom sheaths with a ton of options. Very impressed by his work! Second one makes Treeman's combat knife sheaths, and have a lining to help prevent scratching the blade.

It is 01....Not a bad idea. may do that in the mean time.

I just emailed C4, see if he can do anything. He says you can get them lined. I am guessing with suede? Which is leather so that may not be best to have it lined with?

More like the loop side of velcro. Mine definitely aren't suede, so none of the issues associated with leather.

I use spec ops sheaths for a few of my knives, might be another option for ya.

This just arrived from the shop....I do not remember them offering this sheath for the 18....BUT this could give you an excuse to buy a 16!!

C158, Spec-Ops "Combat Master" is an excellent sheath. Kydex lined Cordura. Sorry for the poor quality of the pic..
