Seeing the Buck 110 in the other forum section has reminded me of the different Buck Knives I have owned over the years. This was one of my favorites. Early Model 184 with the usual 2 grappling spikes. This example also came with Bucks wire cutter attachment, it used 1 of the spikes for additional leverage.

Also Buck worked with Phrobis who won the US Army XM9 Bayonet trials. Mickey Finn, who designed the bayonet, realized that there was a potential for a person to get badly injured using the bayonet and scabbard in the wire cutter configuration. He shortened the cutting edge and added the blade stop to help prevent this type of injury from occurring. A small number, maybe 6 or 8, (This one is serialized #1 on the cutter plate) of these bayonets were made to show the Army and were offered to the Army at no additional cost. The Army, in its infinite wisdom, turned it down and insisted on the original design that was tested and won the trials. So this safety feature was never added.

Good stuff, Eric. I've never seen the 184 wire cutter! Do you mind if I use your photos to start a discussion on the Buck Forum?

Great! Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing what they have to say about it.

Thanks for the additional photos, Eric. I posted the first set of photos on the Buck Forum, but no one could see them, but me. Everyone is thinking that I am referring to the wire cutter at the bottom of the M9 sheath.

I've reposted the photos. Hopefully they will show this time.
