Happy Father's Day to all. Fellow RKS member, Peter Kaufman had a unique idea. I'll let him pipe in if he wishes but the concecpt of a "Randall / Harley Davidson" build is quite facinating. What do ya'll think?
I'm thinking
"Black...Orange...Silver..." for a start on "colors-n-hardware" along with the leather would work. How about a small blade (4 1/2" or less) that would ride well on your belt while on the bike? How about a black sheath? There are a good amount of possibilities. Let me hear from you folks. It just might make an interesting "build"...Thanks for the idea Peter!
Best, Capt. Chris

I think a Gambler would make a cool Harley knife.

Maybe a Harley logo inlaid in the handle or the butt?

Capt,
I thinking along the lines of a #2-4" with SS blade, nickel silver reduced hilt, aluminum & black spacers, black micarta commando handle, and radiused nickel butt cap.

It would also have to have a Ford insignia as well to make it a "Super Duty".

Cap, nice Hog! Softail with a six speed - you are ready for some crusin!

If you were to ever get a wild hair haul it and your atv to Denver and we can hit the trails / highways up in the mountains. Last weds. Nan and I came up on a Moose cow with calf on a OHV trail up near Lake Granby. Also saw one of the big ole Rocky Mt. Bull Elk in velvet. On the road up near Empire we saw 8 Rocky Mt. Big Horns in the grader ditch. From now til the end of summer we will go up every week for one to two days. At 9000 feet it still gets darn chilly at night. Need a good fart sack!

We still have a pair of Road Kings - 2000 Classic and a 2003 Screamin Eagle Standard out of the CVO shop with the 103 Stroker Motor. My 2000 is my Mountain Bike, had the motor built and a true Baker 6 Speed installed in 2003. I have an extra Harley Race Tune Kit for that 2003 - the box has been open, but the module is still in its sealed packaged "never mated to a bike". Will trade for anything RMK.

Cap - question, paid my RKS dues back in March via PayPal - certainly understand the circumstances, but haven't received notice of receipt. No problem on my end, just don't want anyone thinking I didn't pay up.

Lets see some picks of that New Hog with some road dirt on it!! It is a beauty!!

A #2 would LOOK fine. In most jurisdictions double-edged blades are verboten, so legal carry could present a problem.

A 4" Gambler(unsharpened clip)with the handle HALORANGER suggested, or a reduced hilt #22 handle would be nice.

Black Ebony Handle or Black Mircata, Doug's silver Hilt & Butt. Black cross draw no hone sheath. On a 12/8 Big Bear with single hilt old style square top and finger grips with thong. I will take one!

Model 26 with #25 style handle with Black Micarta center piece and Orange Micarta instead of leather outer pieces, and Nickel Silver Hilt, Silver Spacers, and Nickel Silver Butt Cap. Is it even possible???

I am not a motorcycle guy myself, but I certainly am not shy on giving an opinion for this build.
How about a model 15 CDT, sawteeth, orange and black G10 with a Harley medallion where a compass would go and a black sheath with nickel rivets and canteen snap.

Peter

Very nice bike.
The harley emblem on the sheath and miniature cylinders if it's possible to find somewhere on the handle. That would be a great Randall :-) Black ebony

Joe, Massachusetts is one place:

GENERAL LAWS OF MASSACHUSETTS
PART IV, TITLE I, CHAPTER 269, Section 10, Carrying dangerous weapons.

(b) Whoever, except as provided by law, carries on his person, or carries on his person or under his control in a vehicle … any knife having a double-edged blade … shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than two and one-half years nor more than five years in the state prison, or for not less than six months nor more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction, except that, if the court finds that the defendant has not been previously convicted of a felony, he may be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars or by imprisonment for not more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction.

Let's see, John Kerry and Teddy Kennedy, proprietor of the "Chappaquiddick Car Wash", yeah, it makes sense now. I guess if I visited Mass., I would feel more secure knowing that a double edged knife was not in the hands of law abiding citizens.

We have one "jurisdiction", any others?

I had thought when I posted that, that if it was not possible, that maybe the leather could be dyed Orange? I don't know if that is possible or not.

But your way would work too.

NY STATE Law is a little vague on this ... New York CITY ... NO!

Of course I always thought "illegal" is if you get caught! ? grin

Any way ... I think a 4" Gambler with some Black & Orange Micarta (if this exists??) would be cool.

NJ is the same way. In fact it was the 2nd most restrictive state in the country when it came to personal freedom. NY was #1.

I'd like a 5-4.

What, no firearms?????? I'm leaving.

We have firearms and we have Model#2's it just harder to get the licences.

I have a small Sasquach coming in the next week or so, they are veiwed as daggers in Australia, I applied for the permit back in March, it takes a while. It's any bodies guess how many people have been stabbed during that time but our law makers are happy that they're at least seen to be doing something.

That is exactly what I was getting at, a permit for a knife? How f****ed up is that?!?!? Based on the historic view of Aussies being "men's men" and tough, rugged outdoorsmen, it suprises me you Aussies allowed that to happen. The confiscation of your firearms 15 or 20 years ago was a travesty and an assault on your personal liberties.

Wish I had it back. It screams compared to my fat boy. Smoother, More comfortable...of course: When I punch this one out at it's 1,000 service, pop on the new pipes, re-tune and dyno at 100...a lot of that angst will go away. I'll tell ya' one thing. Nobody can beat HD's new 6 speed! The fuel injection is flawless as well, although no better than the Roadliner. One other word..."Resale"!!
Back to the build...3 1/2-4 1/2"..."without" a "TB"...Is that what it's lookin' like??

Semi automatics rifles, semi automatics shotguns and pump action shotguns were confiscated in 1996; pistols larger than .38 were confiscated in 2002. The license for any firearm (or any other thing) can be cancelled at any time. We don't get to vote on it.

Lockback folding knives are to be banned from import at the end of July this year. They will then become permitted for military police and government purchase only. We will then be told to hand the existing ones to police stations before a certain date, after which possession will be illegal.

I guess it is easier to protect your personal liberties when they are guaranteed by your constitution. That is unique to the United States.

Australia’s constitution only guarantees you one right, the right to elect a government. There are no personal liberties; we have to have a licence to climb a ladder with more than 2 steps, a licence to be alone in a room with children that are not you own, a licence to do voluntary work for a charity, the list is endless. Some licences like car, boat, bike and chainsaw require you to sit a test, others you just hand over the money.

I have 3 wallets to carry all my licences. I even have a licence to collect knives, a licence to carry knives, a licence to display knives and a licence to sell knives.

Presumably your government has these restrictions in place for a (perceived) reason. My question is can it be demonstrated that the crime rate has radically declined since the implementation of the laws or do they simply just want the money?

We wouldn't know our police commissioner just resigned (with a huge payout) because it was discovered that he released false crime statistics.

Most Australian politician do very little, yet they receive enormous pensions after just 8 years in office and they get tax payer funded holidays for the rest of their life. They have to be seen to be doing something for all these perks, but the country is run by multinational mining companies, there is no money for actual policing, so their answer to everything is, introduce a license. Someone falls of a ladder introduce a license, someone drowns in a backyard swimming pool introduce a license. There were 3 people killed in Melbourne last month with hammers, the coroner actually recommended to the government that there be tighter restrictions on hammers, if that was his recommendation the politicians are required to act on it. All we can do is wait 4 years and vote for the alternative government that has all the same policies.

It's crazy

NZ has the same political system, but it is much more rural based, and more practical. They don't have the mineral resoarces that Australia has so their political system is still controlled by the people rather than multinational companies. The idea of banning guns knives and tools in NZ would be just laughed at.

Folks,
While this all very interesting, this thread is about building a Randall knife. Can we please get back on topic.

Sorry Capt.
You are correct, it is slightly of topic.

The point is double edged knives are illegal in some jurisdictions; the majority of those are overseas. But the RKS does have members in those places both domestic and foreign. I have pulled out of the final stage of many of your builds because the majority chose a knife that would cause import problems in my country, and I have no problem with that. However it is a point worth considering.

I had no specific Randall knife in mind for this build. I astually like a "Small Gambler", as to size and weight, etc. It could be had with the top edge honed dull a bit, to be sure. Probably the best thing to do is "make a list"....I'll start.
Possible contenders:

A) "Pathfinder"
B) Small "Camp-N-Trail"
C) 4 1/2" "Fisherman/Hunter"
D) "Trout-N-Bird" (Either style)
E) Small Model #4-4 1/2"
F) "GTR"
G) "Denmark"
H) "Little Game Skinner"
I) Small "Alaskan Skinner" (3 1/2" or 4")
J) "Outdoorsman"
K) "Gamemaster"
L) "Woodsman"
M)"Fireman"
N) "Cattleman"
0) Small "Stanaback Special"

OK: That's enough for starters. The "Fireman" and "Stanaback Special" are both 1/4" stock and won't be as light as the others listed here. Everything can be made politically correct...or just plain "knife correct" and left alone.
Let's here your opnions, Crew. We don't have to leave out a "Guardian" or a small "Stiletto" either. They just won't be legal in some places.

I do like the same: small Gambler looks more appropriate for this build.
I do think A-D people like durable and "no problem" stuff....like theyr skooters, so I don't think ivory will be that appreciated...and/or white stuff generally....
I go for black micarta with "all" orange spacers...and here's the challenge for...CAPT.
Who else can find that?

perhaps a orange handle with all black spacers...The shop won't install orange spacers...and I think I'm glad about that!

Can't use the "Harley" logo or name. Jim Behring informed me of that today. He made 3 knives (yes..."3"...He was gonna make more) and received a "cease" letter from Harley davidson.
Steve: Where did you come up with that sheath with that light thread stitching?

How about LIVE TO RIDE on one side of the handle and RIDE TO LIVE on the other?

Or etched on the blade?

Or something like a pendant or keychain with that slogan (no Harley logo) that can be inlaid like a compass?

Or...slogan on blade/handle and an eagle inlaid on the butt?

Just trying to spark some ideas. smile

It's a fake, Captain. I didn't have a black sheath for a small Gambler, so I took a pic of my brown sheath and then removed the color in Photoshop.

How about a stabilized Osage Orange wood handle and have a laser engrave whatever you want on the handle ...or the blade. Chris has a laser guy that could do it.

Osage Orange is really a cool species of wood. Very USA native wood. The Osage Indians used it exclusively for their bows. Very tough wood and also very unique.

Having spent a lot of time around bikers (both the stereotypical and modern day ones) I'm disappointed that a Bowie isn't on the list. I understand that you are looking for a 4" or under but...it just doesn't seem right. Although, I think that the tool of choice for the modern biker is the multitool.

The Motor Company guards what they see as their intellectual property jealously. RMK, nor a dealer, may not sell a knife with the bar and shield or other registered trademarks used. However, there is nothing stopping the end user from adding a personally owned emblem to the handle. I think that I might be able to come up with something to give the winner of this knife. Of course, if they ride a Beamer, Kawi or Honda, I can't help.

Wow. Thanks Steve !!!
The old bike hasn't looked that good in years shocked

(The picture dates back to about 1976. The bike was stolen by some low life not long after that in early 1978)

That's a nice bike. Bet you miss it just as much as I miss my '65 GTO that was stolen in '67--along with my Randall #18 Solingen crutch-tip that was inside!

I admit I wouldn't mind having it back, but I'm pretty sure I would miss a crutch-tip equipped GTO a whole lot more...

Anyway, the bike is still with us in a way. My wife has been wearing the proceeds from the insurance check on her left hand for 32 years now.

OK Crew:
Back from Bama...Here's the "TOP 3" vote getters. We need to choose "ONE"...but (there's that word again)...We probably need to discuss the merits (and de-merits) of each before we vote.
Also: For our RKS friends and members in foreign countries, like England, Irelend, Australia and Massachusetts, I will arrange for the top bevel to be "dulled" if the final build turns out to be a "TB" (top bevel sharpened) Randall knife.
Here's the "TOP 3":

1) Model #26-4"

2) Stanaback Special-4"

3) Small Gambler

Let's hear from ya'...Capt. Chris

I think the Small Gambler, being slim, would "ride" nice on a Rider!

While not on the "list", a Model 18 5 1/2 is of industrial design appearance making it in line with a Harley. To me fits with HD; rugged mechanical beauty. The handle could be turned as fins on a cylinder, circumferentially paint stripe it if you want, threaded cap could contain a logo.

I suppose we could take an official "roll call" but it looks like a "Small Gambler" is going to get the nod. Let me hear your choice.
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: If no objections, we'll move on with this "Harley" build using a Small Gambler as the base...CCS

OK, Crew:
A "Small Gambler" comes with a lot of tricks right from the Get-go!
* Stainless
* Thumb notches
* Nickel silver reduced hilt
* Black micarta handle (concaved)
* Pouch sheath (with boot clip)

It (along with the Model #24, Guardian) do require a specific handle "size" when ordering with "CW" (Customer's supplied handle material). The material has to be as follows:
3/4" x 1 1/4" x 4 1/8". I have some very large blocks (only a couple) of orange G-10. They were cut to fit the larger Randall Model #12's and can be cut down to this specific size. The Randall shop will not mess with cutting down G-10 material. It's so tough on belts, blades and drill bits that the exact size material needs to be submitted.
I am only bringing this information up to enlighten folks who were not aware of this and to let you understand that all of the above means this knife will not be cheap. As of July 1st the shop will charge $80 to install G-3 or G-10 handle material.
OK: Enough of that. Let's figure out how we're gonna finish this Biker Build>
Thanks, Capt. Chris

OK, Crew:
It looks as though everyone wants some sort of custom micarta handle material. Problem is: Where to find the laminated orange & black in an appropriate block for this Small gambler. As I have stated, i have quite a few micartas, G-3 and G-10 pieces that would work...but no orange-n-black.
Does anyone have a source?
Thanks, Capt. Chris

I have exhausted my sources for obtaining orange & black material that would be suitable for this build. Let's have a "ROLL CALL" vote for:

A) Randall shop-supplied micarta
B) Custom micarta

Let me hear from ya'.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

PS: Here's an "Ivorite" version, trimmed in black with Randall's micarta...CCS

Resurected and brought back to the top, this Harley build also got lost. I hope we can continue with it's completion. Here's what we had nailed down...to this point

Randall "Small Gambler"
Stainless
Thumb notches
Nickel silver reduced hilt
Custom micarta handle

I cannot find any black and orange micarta. I can find orange G-10 or we can use the shop's black micarta. Spacers? Whatever ya'll decide on. Sheath? Tan, black or waxed...Let me hear from ya'll!
Best, Capt. Chris

Yes it can, "BUT"...(There's that word again)...the shop refers to that micarta as red & "blue"...not black.

I see the way everyone is headed...and that's AOK with me (ya'll know I don't care what we build)..."BUT"...Has no one thought about a nickel silver collar? Just surprised, I am. (As Master Yota would say)...
Best, Capt. Chris

Harley Davidson's image is always the colors of black & orange. If you did a nickel silver collar, you would have a knife with no black coloration.
Would not look right.

I figured the black sheath...Anyways: It's less money for everyone to go with all black...or $20 more for aluminum & black spacers..."BUT"...(I know)...I don't care what we build. I was just surprised nobody wanted the collar.
Best, Capt. Chris

Sorry to bring this back up.

I searched for it to see what we had decided because I'm thinking about a concealed carry knife, and the discussion about double edged sharp blades being illegal in a lot of places was something I was concerned about.

It appears we never finished this one!

Do you want to revive this build Capt.?

I forgot about this "leftover" build. By all means, if everyone wants to finish this then we should do so. There doesn't appear to be much left to work out, except for a couple of points:
A) Availabilty of Orange G-10 in the appropriate size
B) Spacers
C) Butt cap...or not
D) Sheath color
How about this: I will try and find a small piece of orange, or orange & black micarta, G-10 or laminated wood at the Blade show. When I return, in a little over a week, we can pick this baby up where we left off and finish it.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: Photos of a LARGE Gambler in Orange G-10 and a small one in red/blue laminated micarta...CCS

Any luck on the Orange or Orange/Black handle material at the show?

OK Crew:
It has, indeed, been a while since we worked on this build. I did "not" fine any type of orange handle material of proper spec for this Small Gambler at the Blade show. Sorry: It's just one of those things. I guess we're sort of back to square one. That might not be a bad thing, after so much time passing.
How about this for a "ROLL CALL VOTE". Vote for one of the following:
A) Stick with the Small Gambler and continue searching for orange G-10.
B) Stick with the Small Gambler and use Randall's shop-supplied black micarta.
C) Scrap the Small Gambler and build another Randall model.
D) Scrap this build and start a new Harley build.
I think a bike knife would be a well-received project. It's just that the odd specs for a Guardian or Small Gambler make it difficult to find handle material. We have some of the same crew as when we started this build..."BUT"...we also have a whole lot of new crew members who could contribute their ideas to a renewed project.
You know I don't care what we build...Let's VOTE!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Well, I'm saying, if it's an old school/outlaw/scooter-folk type piece; there's only one way to go. A #8-4 w/early grind, r,w&b spacer stack (same reason Bo chose 'em), straight/thin black Micarta (maybe stag) handle w/compass and a high ride black sheath. As close as the old-faithful Sharpfinger (ubiquitous amongst us early v-twin scooter pilots) as RM will permit.

If not this, and considering the content; only a Gambler or a 24 would suffice. If a more "modern era', hipster type -well, sky's the limit.

I vote "D" and my suggestion would be to build a model 2-4 or 2-5 as a boot knife. Still goes along with a "biker" build and perhaps we can find some orange handle material for a commando handle.

D) Scrap this build and start a new Harley build.

My suggestion/vote this time will be for the Model 4 - 4 1/2".

This was the model I decided on due to the double-edged blade prohibition in a lot of areas when researching a CCW fixed blade. I just wish the blade was 4 inches instead.

I also googled the Sharpfinger mentioned above as I had never seen one. Interesting blade shape.
