I started working on a new resource for the Randall community over the weekend, and got it to the point that I feel comfortable announcing it to the forum. It is an FAQ for ordering Randall knives, meaning about placing an order, and specifying options. See: http://lundestudio.com/RandallOrderingFAQ/

In other words, the purpose of the FAQ is not about about buying vintage Randalls, or buying Randalls that are already built.

Anyway, please check it out when you have an opportunity. Of course, any and all feedback is welcome.

Good summary Ken ! thanks for the work you put into that.
Are you sure that the current limit rule of five chargeable options does not apply to dealer specials ? If my memory doesn´t fail it was a different story with my last orders of the Nordic Bowie and Stanaback Special, but again, I might be wrong

Best wishes

Yes, I am sure. It is definitely good information to know, and makes it a much easier process to configure a Dealer Special to your liking, making it that much more special.

Nice....just to expand on the "What RMK Dealer Specials Can Be Ordered" information......I think it would be great to have a complete list of Authorized RMK Dealers and contact info.

Ken,

That's a lot of work there! Just a few "misquotes"...

1. STN (sawteeth/no sawteeth) grind IS a chargeable option on any knife where it is available other than the model 18, where the grind is standard.

2. You inadvertently left off the AG Russell Special.

Other than these, FANTASTIC job!!

Many thanks, Scott.

For #1, I will make the appropriate adjustment.

For #2, I called A.G. Russell today, and they told me that their Dealer Special had been discontinued, or at least they told me that it could not be ordered. That is why it was left off the list. I intended to include only those that can still be ordered.

2. News to us!!, actually AGR only orders these by their own specifications (handle wise) and do not take orders that would differentiate from what they will offer in their catalog the next time an order is placed. Although it has been a while since their last request when they do start to order, they do so as to stock up for the next catalog.

Still, great work sir!

It sounds like I should add the A.G. Russell Special then. Who knows. Perhaps including it in this FAQ will increase awareness to the point that A.G. Russell will be encouraged to place another order for them.

Personally I think the AGR Special is a great designed hunting knife. I have one, even though I haven't used it. If I didn't have other Randall users, it would be right up there. It's equally as functional as a #11 if not more so. I would love to have one really tricked out.

Ken,

A very commendable undertaking. I am sure I will use it many times. Your efforts here should save the Randall shop many a phone call.

Best regards,

A few days ago I added to the FAQ, specifically to FAQ Item I-4, a table that details the "RMK Custom Handle Material Specifications."

Great resource!

here is a question I dont know who to ask...

What about blue spacers? are they no longer offered? I have an order due in a few months with all blue spacers...if they are no longer offered will my order be changed?

and another

"#14 finger grips—non-chargeable, but specifying "finger grips" is chargeable, if not standard."

Can we still specify deep or shallow? for instance could a fireman spec. be ordered with shallow finger grips?

The available non-metal spacer colors should be red, white, blue, and black. Choosing either one of these as a solid spacer color should be fine, and because there is no metal involved, it should be a non-chargeable option.

My guess is that the finger grips work one way. Specifically that conventional handles can have conventional finger grips of #14 finger grips, but that other handles, such as the Fireman Special, can only have #14 finger grips.

I had asked the Cap about this before and he said no all white or all blue.

Reference you question: What about blue spacers? are they no longer offered?
I looked on Page 6 of Capt. Chris's "Ordering" thread(just below this thread) and there is no mention of all blue spacers. I don't think it is doable anymore.

The FAQ, specifically Item I-4, was just updated to reflect the possible spacer configurations, to include colors and materials. See: http://lundestudio.com/RandallOrderingFAQ/I/4.html

I also made minor adjustments to FAQ Items I-1, I-2, and I-3.

The most positive part of this FAQ is that it's an ongoing project that can and will be updated as required. In addition, it's easily searchable without having to load and scroll through hundreds of posts while looking for an answer to a particular question. This is clearly a valuable and much needed resource. Well done Ken.

Just FYI, a new FAQ item, I-6, was added last night, which covers variation in the #27 handle's 13-spacer configuration, in terms of the use of aluminum and brass spacers. See: http://lundestudio.com/RandallOrderingFAQ/I/6.html

I am glad to hear that the FAQ is helpful. Heck, I even use it. To a great extent, I created the FAQ as a way to put all of my notes in one place, then figured that the entire Randall community could benefit from it. And, as usual, I welcome any comments or suggestions. I operate on the principle that if something looks or feels incorrect, then it probably is.

Going down any path requires taking the first steps, and knowing in what direction those steps should be represents half the battle in ensuring that you'll attain your goal.
