Welcome everyone,
Old and new forum members alike. We just completed a fun build of a Randall Model #8..."Old Style" Trout-N-Bird. Seeing as how there's nothing to really "build" with the Randall Model #9, Pro thrower, I thought you folks would like to concentrate on the Randall Model #10. 3 blade lengths, 2 blade shapings (on the 3" version) and a host of handle material and sheath options all adds up to some choices needing to be made.
Don't worry: We're not going to completely forget about the Model #9. Upon completion of this Model #10 build we are going to draw numbers and give one of you contributors a chance to win them "BOTH"!
That's right. We're building a starter set. That means "everything" in the set. This one's concentrating on the Model #10 but the #9 will tag along. Hope you folks think this is a good idea.
I don't care who gets this thing started, long as it starts! When I say "contributors" I mean exactly that. In order to qualify for the purchase rights on this set...you have to participate! Let's hear from ya'!
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: Comments as well as photos are encouraged...CCS

Neither of those grinds (sawteeth or sawteeth/no sawteeth) are available on a model #10.

Pap,
The shop will not install stag on a model #10. There were a few offered...back in the day, but no longer.

Ok, I that wood looks really nice, Chris. What is it?
I think I change my vote from a maroon micarta to a dark
hardwood (cocobola, ironwood, snakewood, etc). Still 5".

The wood on the #10-5 above is Madrone Burl. I'll see if I have a cocobola for example. I think I do.

a beautiful example, Capt. Chris. My choice exactly: 5 inch blade and some nice wood for the handle, waxed sheath of course smile

10-7. Cocobolo handle with wrist thong. Perfect all-arounder whilst sailing down to the little lattitudes.

Can cut up your limes and filet your pompano with equal ease. Or maybe the jacks you got while spearfishing that morning smile

Wrist thong helps when you've got wet hands.

EDIT: Ziricote or Bocote would be a great option too, if you could get some. Probably pricey.

Usually I say go with the big blade but I think a 5 inch blade is plenty for this knife and either some nice wood or the Captains Bone linen or shop supplied white micarta and a nice standard wax sheath, I'm not too fond of the pouch sheaths myself.

Dan,
White micarta, i.e. the Randall shop's ivorite (current stuff) is not doable on model #10's. It is only used for cut down tang handles.
Sorry, Capt. Chris

To make it real different, could we have a bone linen on one side and a maroon micarta on the other? That would make it a rare bird.

I don't know if the shop will "2-tone" them anymore. Here's a knife I made for a Florida Gator about 3 years ago. (Sure hope he doesn't cut himself with it).

After a little more thought on this maybe just use what the shop has instead of adding over a $100 between the material and the customer furnish charge on a $225 knife. Just a thought.

I think the 5 inch is better for cleaning and fileting of fish

I have to go with the 5". Practical blade length. I love the 3" blades and carry one some of the time when my 21 needs a rest. But the five should work out great for this build. Fancy wood to set this puppy apart.

My vote is for "C", I think the 5 inch blade is a good all around blade size and the 7 inch is too long for a utility knife.

No sense waiting for the absentie vote. We're building a Model #10-5". Probably appropriate for a "starter" set. There are not a ton of options available for model 10's...but there "are" some. Let's talk about handles available. From the Randall shop you can get:
Aluminum / Black micarta / Red micarta / Rosewood
What sounds good to you folks?
Best, Capt. Chris

If that's not doable, I'd go for the

I agree with BILLY, some custom wood,or some micarta that's not seen every day. The 10-5 is one of my most used Randall's. Shop rosewood will do.

As I have stated many times, I don't care what we build. One could argue that a "starter set" should be kept quite simple and we have stuck with that idea for most of this series. Custom handle material is a luxury...BUT"...(There's that word again)...Model #10-5's do not afford us a lot of options, therefore I think it would be acceptable if that's what the crew votes for.
We'll see...Capt. Chris

I think that is a very good idea! I have a 10-7 with aluminum and not only that it is "special" - it feels and works very well.
And it's most "authentic", too smile

Aluminum seems to be a pretty popular one here.

Before I vote, I have a question, having never held an aluminum handle---doesn't it get very slippery when it's wet?

Lets at least make this at least a little different than all the 10's out there. I see Rosewood all the time, Aluminum not as much but still common. Nice wood is such a treat and the Capt. has some great stuff.

In answer to the question of slippage in an aluminum handle..."NO"...not a problem.
Weight? That's another story. Aluminum is bullet-proof..."but"...(There's that word again)...quite a bit heavier than you nay expect.
Best, Capt. Chris

In that case, Aluminium, as the Brits say.

If this is supposed to be one of the "starter" knives, then I change my vote to rosewood. That was my first #10 and it's still in use from 1978 and pretty as ever.

C - Aluminium

Mine gets used a lot and still feels great - it's definitely less slippery than micarta!

Captain, has old growth cyprus ever been used for handle material? I know those old logs are brought up from the bottom of some of the old rivers in Florida. Don't know what it would look like, but bet it is bullet proof!

I'm not so sure about the bullet-proofness of water-logged old cypress. Living and breathing cypress is pretty cool stuff. We have all seen wall clocks and tables made from cypress for sale alongside our Florida highways. For years these were some of the best tourist traps!
As tough as lignum vitae is (and I don't think anyone can argue that who knows anything about it) it still gives me (and the Randall shop) fits. Cracking is common on my handles. I have probably used more LV than anyone on Randall knives, with over 100 made and ordered. I would be cautious on the cypress.
Besides: I don't know where one would go about locating some that had been properly cured, dried and stabilized. Could be a real bugger to complete the build..."BUT"...(I know, I know)...I don't care what we build.
Keep those ideas comin' folks!
Best, Capt. Chris

OK Crew,
"D" (my stash) finished second by one less vote than "C" (aluminum) which came in first. A & B are eliminated. Let's celebrate Memorial Day and, at the same time, vote for a clear winner of the choices left!
"ROLL CALL"....Vote for:

A) Capt. Chris' Stash
B) RMK shop-supplied aluminum

Glad to see so many votes, i.e. so many participants!
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: Please, by all means, plea your case for your heart-felt favorite and (as always) photos are encouraged...CCS

A. Most of the 10's I see are Micarta and then Rosewood. Not so many Aluminum, but very seldon one with kick ass wood. Capt has the goods lets use them and make this knife special.

It's been a bit of time (and "2" knife shows) since this build was discussed. The score is 11-9 in favor of Capt. Chris' stash of handle material.
We have some new forum members who have recently joined us. Perhaps we should give this a couple of days before we move on. Let's call it on Wednesday evening, around "8" my time.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Well...It's been kinda' hectic larely but a promise is a promise. This is the forst of "2" groups ya'll can pick from. I would ask that you vote, by designated letter, for the handle material you want. There are "7" choices here. I will provide an additional "7" after these have been voted on.
I think it best if we do this in 2 stages, by process of elimination. Of these first "7" only "3" will make the semi-finals. We will then move on to the second group of "7" and eliminate all but "3" from that group. After the top "6" are decided we can whittle or vote for one winner or whatever, i.e. see how the vote goes. I hope that is agreeable with all ya'll! (That, Tony, is a Southern plural).
Choice A) This is stabilzed Red Mallee Burl and would work quite well.

Choice B) This is natural paper phenolic. It will give a finished product, not unlike the coloring of the old brown micarta. I see no reason why this would not make an excellent and unique choice.

Choice "C" is a stabilzed and dyed flamed/quilted maple. Good character and not any noticable burls (knots) to contend with. Should make a nice knife.

Choice "D" is a fine example of stabilzed Amboyna burl woos! Great figure, dense and little or few knots to contend with. Another quality choice.

Coice "E" is a cherry red phenolic that is a new material to me. It was sent to me, either as a sample, or by a customer who didn't care for it's color and ability to turn darker. This could be the "dark horse" of the competition!

Choice "F" is an old favorite, California buckeye burl! The "burl" would be my reservation as, when cut into bologna skins for a model #10, something could "pop out"! Still: It is quite popular and I knew that if I did not include a piece someone would ask about it.

Choice "G" was another no-brainer: My bone linen micarta. I have quite a lot of experience with this micarta. The Randall shop loves it, it has it's own personality and no issues, so far as I know.

OK, Crew:
The beginning of the end. Please, by all means, discuss these choices amongst yourselves and plea your case for your favorite. You may vote for more than one choice, but no more than "3". Let's hear from ya'!
Best, Capt. Chris
Re-cap (it's not always a tire):

A) Red Mallee Burl
B) Natural paper phenolic
C) Blue/green stabilzed flame maple
D) Stabilized amboyna burl
E) Red cherry phenolic
F) Buckeye burl
G) Bone linen

This is the 7th day and a good many of you have voted. It's still too close to call the top but "A" "E" are running quite a distance behind the others.
"C"..."D"...are slightly ahead of the pack, sometimes by only "1 vote". Let's wrap up our voting on these so we can get the other batch up here. One more day and I'll call it. Thanks for your input so far.
Best, Capt. Chris

Unless I mis-counted it looks like:
#1 vote getter was: "D" AMBOYNA BURL
#2 vote getter was" "C" FLAME MAPLE
#3 was a tie between: "F" BUCKEYE & "G" BONE LINEN

#1 and #2 are in: We have a run off between;

A) BUCKEYE
B) BONE LINEN

Please vote for "ONE HANDLE CHOICE ONLY"!!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

By a score of 13-8 the winner for third place in our first seed is: A) Buckeye! Here's where we stand to the moment:

Moving onto round #2:
1) Amboyna
2) Flame maple
3) Buckeye burl

Now: For the entries into the second seed:

A) Leopard lace
B) Natural brown paper micarta
C) Bocote
D) Orange G-10
E) Lignum vitae

Please cast you votes for your top "3" of the "5" new entries. These 3 will go up against the forst 3 selected for the semi-finals!
Thanks for your help, Capt. Chris

OK Crew:
The winners of this "heat" are:
A) Leopard Lace
C) Bocote
E) Lignum vitae

Lotta' "wood lovers" amongst us. Who can blame ya'? Nice wood is always a good choice. Some of you newer members may want to write that down. Many times, when customers ask me about their ideas for a certain Randall they wish to order, I'll inquire as to why they haven't cconsidered a wooden handle. The answers vary but a good many reply that they "simply didn't think about wood".
Keep it in mind. The Randall shop has some splendid examples of wood. You don't have to travel this "custom wood" route to obtain a nice knife.
OK: So we're down to the following contenders for scales to be ordered on this Randall Model #10.

1) Amboyna
2) Flame Maple
3) Buckeye Burl
4) Leopard Lace
5) Bocote
6) Lignum Vitae

Vote for your absolute favorite "3" and, given a wek's time, we'll have this bad boy narrowed down, seriously.
Thanks for your participation, Capt. Chris

OK Crew:
We're into the finals! This is going to be cake walk. Here's the top "3" vote getters, starting with the highest vote getter (Lignum Vitae) and end with "LL" in third place. It was quite close but these 3 are the finalists. Discussion if encouraged...vote for "one" choice per crew member. I'll give it a week.
Thanks again, Capt. Chris

We're going to use Lignum Vitae. It wasn't even close! I hope you are all happy with the choice. Lignum Vitae is splendid wood. There is nothing more tough. Now...If someone can re-cap where we're at and what's left to do...we can "Git 'er done"!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

We are building a Model #10 - 5" with Lignum Vitae handle scales.

Are there options available for the sheath?

Can we choose between the Model B and the Model E Cover Sheaths or is there only one choice available?

Pouch sheath with either:
A) Tan (standard)
B) Waxed
C) Black
Let's have a "ROLL CALL" Vote.

It sure does, but I'll give it a couple of days. Tomorrow I travel down to the Randall shop, then over to Gene Beal's shop to cut-n-size a couple of "hundred" pounds of handle material, including this lignum vitae. After I get all of that done we'll probably wrap this one up.
Early on in this build I mentoned that this would/could be a "2 knife" deal. I have a stainless Model #9 to make this happen. That way, no RMK catalog model is left behind....What say ya'll?
Best, Capt. Chris

I'm off in the AM for a short vacation, if you want to call plowing around the "Mouse House" with a daughter and 3 Grandaughters a vacation. I'll return to these forums on Friday (perhaps Thursday evening if I'm done with the oxygen by then)...in the meantime:
Obviously, we're building a Model #10-5" with custom-supplied lignum vitae handle and a waxed "pouch style" sheath. This past week I took our piece of "LV" down to Gene Beal's shop and carefully had it cut to size. Photos below show the "start-to-finish" of our handle material. Thanks for Gene (and Rick) for helping out.
Best, Capt. Chris

If Mitchell reads this and would like to post 1-100 numbers (prior to me gettin' out of Dodge in the morning) we could start to pick our numbers. I've gotta' tell you that this build has been a blast...and quite different from most others.
Please don't forget that entering your number choice means that you would like to purchase this completed project/build, which "also" includes a Model #9-"Pro Thrower" in stainless steel...with a sheath! I'll get photos of that one upon returning. Thanks again to all who participated. We'll do it again real soon.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

I think on this one, you don't pay for each number just pick one number. You give more than one number in case someone else has already picked your first choice.

Yesterday I submitted our lignum vitae to be used on our Model #10-5". The Model #9, in stainless is already sitting in my office. The number gets chosen tonight at 8:00. Winning number will be able to receive the Model #9 right away and the Model #10-5" will be ready by October 24th! All and all, a pretty fast turnaround! If you would like the opportunity to purchase these fine knives for your "starter set" (and have contributed to the build) please submit your number choices prior to 8 PM this evening. Thanks to all of you for a fun build. Model #10's may not have a great deal of option choices..."BUT"...(I know: There's that word again)I think we milked it for all it was worth.
Best, Capt. Chris
