Has anyone ever hunted feral hogs. My son and I have an invitation to hunt hogs on private land. I only hunt what I eat. I have read the red color hogs are the best eating. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks, Walt

Has more to do with what they eat than their color. If you want a good eating one, then keep it under 100 lbs. 50-60 lbs is about prime. 20-30 lbs can be cooked whole. Most of these feral hogs are eating the deer corn, but are also eating anything else. Modern porkers are grown on concrete in a clean environment so tricanosis isn't an issue, but feral hogs are a different story. Thoroughly cook the meat to 160+, that's wny alot of folks just sausage most of the meat and hot smoke it.

I see where Savage came out with a Hog rifle in .223, .308, and .338. Seems to me the .308 would be a perfect rifle; it also comes stock with a threaded barrel for a sliencer to be used around populated areas. I've not seen that before.

Hog hunting is fun and the landowners want them thinned. A sow can have 2 litters a year and up to 8 little porkers. Doesn't take long to have too many.

Thank you Pappy. My son is going to use Winchester 1886 45-70,405g plain base cast bullet Lyman no.2. I am going to use a Remington Hepburn 50-110,420g 1-20. Both are loaded with Swiss powder. No wad, will not shoot over 100 yards. My son and I put up our smokeless powder rifles, shooting black is an adventure all by itself. Walt

Those will work. I have a Browning repro for the 1886 in 45-70; always wanted to shoot a moose with it but never drew out in Idaho. I put a Lyman peep on it and it shoots pretty good if my shoulder holds out. You should have a ball, except the best shooting is right at dusk so open sights are tough unless you are close. Keep us informed.

We shoot them and give them away, but also shoot them and leave them to rot. They are a huge ecological problem, and in fact are the #1 ecological problem in the State of Hawaii.

They are a non-indiginous species, compete with native species for food, destroy crops, eat anything and everything to include endangered species, are nothing more than a problem that needs to be eradicated. See one, shoot it, whether you are going to eat it or not.

Pappy's right with the caliber- just got the delivery device wrong. Try a TC Contender, 12" hunting barrell with factory (or Mag-Na-Port) compensator in 45-70. Looks scary but shoots outstanding and accurate enough to slip in 1 shot kill- pills easily out to 150 yds. with a Bushnell 0 mag red dot. You will love it! And remember just like in the wild always eat the young'ns---sweet and tender!
