Scrimshander database?

Scrimshander database? - 05/17/19 01:22 PM

I just picked up my first scrimshawed Randall and would like to identify the artist, but don't know where to start. Based on the signiture, I assume the artists first name starts with an E and last name starts with a B. Also, any guess on what the 87/47 means? Is there a database of scrimshanders that you guys use? I have tried googling it, but keep coming up empty. All responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ed Brown from Umatilla, Fl. 1987 and his 47th piece (not all were RMKs).
Just my guess, Capt. Chris

Thanks Captain. I'd like to find pictures of his other work and compare so I will do some digging.

I found a piece with the same signiture and it is actually Bob Engnath. The example I found has 93/15. I agree that the first number is probably the year, but the 2nd number cannot be the number of pieces he's worked on. I'll keep digging and see what turns up.

Here is a list of scrimshander marks that I have used.

Thanks Buckspen. That will be very helpful for future reference. And that helps confirm my scrimshander because Bob Engnath happens to be on that list and the signiture matches.
